Hummer in Nest - Watercolor Sketch

Again using the technique Sandy from www.sketchingeveryday.com teaches, I did this sketch of one of my favorite subjects.  I love birds in general but hummers are special to me................especially after having one sit on my finger a few years ago.  I will NEVER forget that experience!!

I am adding my own twist to the basic sketching technique with a little added pen and ink for final detailing.  Also with this sketch, I splashed a bit of green in the nest for added interest.  I did that to denote the mossy look of their nests.  Technically speaking, however, I probably should have added a splash of color to the hummer instead since it's my main subject.  Next time, maybe :)  I was just having fun and didn't think about that until after the fact.

Sandy starting back up for the summer has definitely helped re-ignite my enthusiasm.  I truly love her 6-step sketching technique!  I find it to be simply laid out making sketching not only easier to accomplish but fun as well.  And I love the KISS concept she's mentioned as I have a tendency to over do it.

This is done in a Daler Rowney sketch book.  I'm quite surprised how well it's taking the wet in wet although it's proven to work well for the Tombow soluble ink and waterbrush.

This is wonderful! My eye was drawn to the hummer first, not the nest, since he/she has more concentrated color (less white spaces). I like the subtle green moss.

No hummingbirds around here, but I'm enjoying some baby blue jays nesting in the tree next door, practicing their first flying attempts in our front yard.
