Last 45 Days Drawing

It's been a busy last two months.  We've had both granddaughters come to visit (two individual trips), which has been amazing for us here in Florida.  We love when the family comes to visit but having this one on one time with each granddaughter has been very special for them as well as us.  A treasured time I doubt any of us will forget!

Even with that said, I did manage to get some drawing in...

Chrysalis Two Different Methods

One of our neighbors with children raise Monarchs and while Terry was out walking Miya, he was called over to check out butterflies emerging from their Chrysalis.  He came back to the house to get his camera and went back over taking pictures and learning more about the process.

This family plants Milkweed in pots to attract Monarchs.  Eggs are laid followed by the caterpillars.  These caterpillars are fed the leaves of the milkweed to keep them around so they create their Chrysalis in the plants.  The family moves these plants inside a pop up screened housing you can purchase for this purpose and enjoy the time when the Monarchs emerge.  The wife also created a board with rope they hang under their outside porch light.  It's evident that the family takes a few of the Chrysalis by hand and tie to the rope where they stay until the butterflies emerge.

How neat for those children to be apart of that experience!!!  I learned a lot from this as well.

Terry was told this continues until around October so we have plenty of time should Terry follow through with trying this himself.

From photos, I worked these both digitally and in my sketchbook.  I wanted the digital to be more like how I work in my sketchbooks rather than in depth or formal like I've been doing lately in Procreate (like the portraits and flowers, etc.).

This follows one of the photos Terry took - using Procreate and Gouache brush tool for color work and BJD's Standard Inker for line work and writing.

Then I decided to split between two pages as seen in my handsewn journal using old stock of Fabriano Hotpress paper (140lb).  One page worked with Urban Grey in TWSBI 580ALR and the other using #41 Brown in another TWSBI 580ALR foutain pen (both with F nibs).

Side Note:  When I started working on the hotpress paper with my fountain pens, I didn't like the feel of the nib moving across the paper.  I've worked on hotpress before and do not remember this at all even with EF nibs.  It felt like I was trying to draw or write on a paper with a coating somewhat like you'd find on wax paper.  And whatever it was appeared to collect on the nib and cause thicker lines and tiny blobs I didn't like.  At first my lines were real light and when I went back over them, it's like the grooves the nib made on the paper grabbed the next pass of ink and was really dark.  Was really weird.

The first page I worked (out of three) was like this and I stopped what I was doing leaving the sketch unfinished.  I may return to that page later.  I decided to work on the next page for the above illustrations/writing and it was different.  I didn't have the issues on either of the next two pages.  I'm wondering if when making the books oil or something didn't end up on that one page.  Or maybe the old stock of paper I used is inconsistent with its sizing properties.  I won't know until I continue using this journal book.

Swallowtail Butterfly in Graphite

Before I jump into my next challenge requested of me, I decided to draw this butterfly that showed up outside the window where I sit throughout the day.

I had no idea what kind it was until I looked it up on the internet.  Turns out to be a Swallowtail but not sure which one.  Might be considered an Eastern Tiger Swallowtail or maybe a Black Swallowtail (at least so far from what I've been able to find).

This one was primarily brown (a reddish brown) with off white or cream "white" spots.  Also had suggested spots of powder blue towards the bottom of the wings and above the "white" spots.  In the photo there's a hint of orange just below the long segment of the body where one white spot is split in the center.

Worked in Stillman and Birn Alpha sketchbook with Staedtler Mars Lumograph 2B and 4B pencils.

Leaf Footed Bug

This was done back in April as I was fighting the beginning of an art slump I'm still dealing with.  Just now catching up posting this plus I managed a digital painting today I will share in the next post.

This is a Leaf-footed bug crawling on the front porch back in April.

It was late and I was tired when working on it so no surprise I misspelled "CREEPY"   Although not something I'd want to land on me, I do find them intriguing with their unique shape.

Few Days of Sketching and Painting

As I had hoped, working on my Ipad earlier this month seems to have helped jump start me back into sketching/painting.  At least the last few days I've managed to feel motivated in ...

Season for Acorns

Seems our oak only drops acorns every other year and this year they are starting to show up everywhere.  They are tiny compared to the acorns we had up North but the leaves of this oak here are also very different........smaller and of different shape.

This also goes along with Cathy Johnson's theme Seasons for this month's Sketch with Me event.

Side Note to myself - Black for the beetle is Aliz Crimson plus Paynes Grey giving it a slight reddish-purple tone.  Used the same color for the shadow.

Leaf-Footed Bug

Yesterday while my husband and I were outside, this bug landed on a hibiscus close to where Terry was standing.  Not one we normally see, I ran inside to grab my cell phone to take its picture.  Terry trying to hold the limb from blowing in the breeze startled him and he flew off.  A little while later either he or another one returned and I was able to get a few photos.

Looking it up, I've learned this is called a leaf-footed bug.  It's quite large and not exactly one I'd want landing on me.  I was fine getting close to it as bugs don't normally make me crazy (except bees and ticks) unless they unexpectedly land on me.

Stonehenge Aqua / Lamy Safari with De Altramentis Document Brown ink.  I used Paynes Grey and Bt Sienna for this (QoR watercolors).

November 2018 Monthly Challenge - Creepy Crawlies

This month's challenge between friends is illustrating creepy crawlies.

We are to end up with six illustrations.  We can choose six different "models" or if less than six, we have to sketch in different positions to reach our six quota.

Each illustration has to be done in a different medium.

Worked in Stillman & Birn Beta - large sketchbook

Another from the Trout Lake Nature Center

This is one from the case of moths and butterflies.  I believe it's called a White-lined Spinx.  This particular one just jumped out at me due to the contrast in colors and pattern.  Although it's not showing here, some have areas of pink.  Maybe this one didn't because it was dried.  Another reason I like this particular moth is that I've seen them often around the house.  I just think they are so neat and amazed by the size I've seen.

Decided this time to hold off adding ink.  I might add it later.

Stillman & Birn Beta 3.5 x 5.5 journal

The scan is showing the lighter color a bit more yellow than it should.  The pigment used is Buff Titanium (Daniel Smith) and is more of a light tan or dark off white.  Other colors used are Bt Umber, Bt Sienna, and touch of Paynes Gray.

Unwanted Hitch Hiker

This is from our Heather Oaks Farm sketch outing last Friday.

Picture yourself walking along and all of a sudden you feel something sitting on your nose.  You look cross-eyed to see what it is with this staring back at you.  Would it creep you out?  It sure would me!!!  LOL

Fortunately this time around, it did not happen to me but I have been known to walk into many a web with spiders like this.  I tend to look down at my feet when I'm walking around........especially here in Florida so I don't step in red ant mounds.  Not sure what would be worse.......stepping into an ant mound or having a hitch hiker like this end up on my nose :-O

Before and after color applied.......using QoR watercolors on Epson presentation paper.

Itsy Bitsy Spider

We've seen Orb Weavers before, which we feel are gorgeous and unique spiders, but this is the first we've seen this Spiny Back Orb Weaver.  This page is deceiving giving the impression this little guy is huge but it's very tiny.  Not even a half inch wide.....maybe the size of the very tip of my pinky finger.

There are two in particular with either white body / dark red spines or yellow body / black spines.  Our first siting of this one in particular looked yellow with black.  It was later in the day and I had to try and get underneath to get a photo of him.  The next morning I found him on top of the web giving me a better viewing and realized it was more white with dark red spines.

Of course I did the illustration from my first viewing.  Notice at this point there were three main threads of his web.  Each had this fuzzy part and we read where only the supporting threads will have this.  The next day there were four supporting threads and more of the web between them.

Creepy Crawlies

Although these don't quite have that "creepy" characteristic I place on ticks and stink bugs, I still don't like ants......especially in the house.

We've been battling these little pesky crawlers for the last two weeks in the kitchen area.  Haven't been able to locate the source but it seems we almost have them under control.

Nothing like leaning on the counter and realizing you have hitchhikers crawling on you >:-/

We didn't have any bug spray but I did find Windex zaps them just as easily and without that horrible insecticide smell.

Isn't it funny how we as people as big as we are can be so squeamish or uncomfortable about something so small???

On a Roll

I've been in one of those moods where I'm sketching quite a bit.  I do go through spurts so it will be interesting how long this one lasts.

Here are several I've done the last couple of days.

We are dreading the onslaught of these bugs come end of September through October.  They have become quite a nuisance and hard to keep out of the house.

This is from my Texas trip last year.

The Chapel here is from the Miracle Whip commercial with my adding my own bit changing the overall landscape.

I just finished this one a little while ago.  Used a Uniball UM 151 Brown Black 0.38 gel pen.
