Saturday's Outing Continued

Here are the two additional sketches I started on Saturday while out on location.  All were basically completed in pencil on location with my inking and adding watercolor at home.

Both worked in the Hand Sewn Journal with Fabriano and pens used were the Lamy Safari and the Platinum Carbon fountain pens.  Lexington Gray and Platinum Carbon Black inks

August 15, 2015 Virtual Sketch Crawl

There are groups of people across the globe who physically get together in what are called sketchcrawls.  They meet up somewhere walking around and sketching what they see and experience.  For many people, they don't have this luxury often because of where they live and/or not knowing others who enjoy this type of get together.

Cathy Johnson holds an event each third Saturday of the month pulling people together in what's called a Virtual Sketchcrawl.  Individuals, small groups, and even larger groups from all over, utilize this third Saturday to go out sketching and then come together to share their day out in Cathy's Artists Journal Workshop group under Facebook.  A way for all of us to come together as if we actually met up in one huge group.

This is what I did for yesterday's sketchcrawl.  I've missed out on the last couple of months but managed to participate this month.  This little building stands at the entrance to a shopping mall area in The Villages / Lady Lake area in Florida.  I left the lettering off the building as I just wanted to keep the sketch simple.

Lighthouse Vignette

Many people love lighthouses and I definitely do but more so those that are more angular like this.

Stillman & Birn Delta sketchbook
W&N watercolors - Raw Sienna, Bt Sienna, Bt Umber, Indigo
Daniel Smith watercolors - Cerulean Blue - I absolutely LOVE this Cerulean Blue.  It's warmer than other brands and I like how it behaves wet in wet.

Pilot Prera fountain pen with Lexington Grey ink

Wet in Wet with ink sketch first and watercolor added last.

Trying the Strathmore Visual Journal

I picked this journal up a few months ago and decided to give it a try.  I wasn't really sure what to expect as I haven't used Strathmore paper outside of watercolor pads many years ago that I didn't really care for.  This journal, however, promises to be fun to use.

I like how color lifts; like how the paint spreads wet in wet; and even with a fan blowing over head, the paper stayed wet long enough for me to work an area without fear of it drying too quickly.  The surface is bumpy on the front side of the page and slightly smoother on the back side.........both sides fun to work on.

One thing I noticed using a Micron pen, the ink could be lifted with the corner tip of a slanted flat brush.  That's not such a bad thing either when necessary.

Very first page in the journal which consists of 140 lb Cold Press paper.  Using Daniel Smith watercolors and Micron 03 and 005 pens.

Backside of the first page in the journal.  Slightly smoother surface making it easier to use pen and ink; although, I really didn't find it to be much problem on the front either.  Using Daniel Smith watercolors and Micron 03 pen.

Along the Coast

I had fun sketching and painting these little vignettes.  Worked in the Beta journal with the Pilot Prera and Lexington Gray ink and Daniel Smith watercolors.

Although I'm pushing myself to work on more complicated buildings like one would find in a town or city, I still prefer the simplicity of barns, cabins, and buildings like these.
