Digital Scratch Art - ZenDoodles

Similar to scratch art, one can produce drawings and even zendoodles and tangles with a similar method using a digital art app.  In my case, Procreate.

First I created a layer with random colors completely covering the layer leaving no white areas.

Then I created another layer on top and filled in with black.

My "scratching" tool is the eraser tool and work my tangles on the black layer.  As I erase, the colors from the layer beneath show through.

ZenDoodles

Twice this week I missed going to classes/presentations I would have loved to have gone to.

One was an actual beginner's class given by a certified ZenTangle teacher (Ginny Stiles) and one by a gal at the art center (Gail Bannock) who just likes to zendoodle with no official training.  It would have been great to experience the difference between the two ladies in how they approach this meditative drawing.

Although I might not have been able to attend in person, I was with the groups in spirit and decided to play a bit with how I like to approach zendoodles/tangles.  I don't start out with a string but instead start in one location and then build off of that.

Both of these were started at the gem I first created and then just continued along until I decided to stop.  I think it's easy to tell that my brain seeks balance and might be the reason I prefer not to use a random string.

This first one I ran out of paper surface or I would have added a bottom that looked like feet or some sort of support..........almost like a lady standing, wearing clothing similar to what Morticia in The Adam's Family wore.  I had started with the gem and then worked the two strands that created a figure 8 and just continued from that point adding to both sides.

Worked the color first with yellow and then the bit of red.  Placed the highlight area and then added the border.

Worked a few lines with red and finally some shading with red and light pressure.

This one I also started at the gem.  Worked this while I was listening to/watching CSI on TV.

Christmas Gift from Santa Clare

This is a post I forgot to include for 2017.

The day after Christmas I received a gift from my friend and sister who resides in the UK.  It's called the Cuttlelola which is a motorized stippling pen run off of rechargeable batteries.

My dear friend, Clare, challenged me to work a sketch using this pen before the end of the year.  In selecting a subject, I chose to do some zen doodling but with the stippling technique instead of marker pens.  I had so much fun that I ended up doing two right away.

Then she challenged me to do another but adding color to it.

There are two speeds to the pen and I found I had better control and felt less vibration in my hand using the slower speed.  What would take hours to complete doing this by hand didn't take long at all with this pen.  I love stippling anyways as I find it relaxing and this pen just makes it plain fun.......lol

Zen - Doodling

Just playing around doodling with a few zentangle patterns.

This was worked using Procreate, Apple Pencil, and Ipad Pro.

An all day Zentangle

I worked this yesterday off and on to include early evening.  Kind of a fill in between doing other things.  And, I used one of the pages I colored with distress inks in the small S&B Beta journal.

Playing with Zentangles

Now and then I try my hand at working zentangles.  Mostly what I've done in the past was more on the lines of Zentangle Inspired Art (ZIAs).

I'm so looking forward to a class/workshop being given towards the end of this month by a certified zentangle teacher.  So far I've just been winging it looking at books and looking at examples on the web.  I also look forward to learning about proper shading and eye movement within the tangles.

In the meantime, I'm just playing to see what I can do on my own :-)

While at the hospital Wednesday sitting with hubby, I tried the traditional method of frame/border and string.  This is what I ended up with.

Now this morning I thought I would try working one without any confines of a string or border.  I wanted to see how it might end up starting in the center and working out around the first pattern put down.  As of right now, I think I prefer this over the border and string method but that might change once I take the class.  I really don't know what I'm doing at this point but feel a sense of freedom with this method over the other.

Winning Tat Sketch

After several more attempts, I finally came up with a simpler design my sister in law could use should she get another tattoo.

First is on the regular white of the paper and then using photoshop elements, I created a background to somewhat resemble skin color to see how it might look.

She loves it!!!

Zen Dragonflies

I bought this dragonfly sun catcher and was in the mood to doodle so sketched one on paper using pencil first and then a Pitt Artist pen........erasing the pencil marks.......and then scanned it.

From there I created a photoshop layout where I duplicated and resized to fit a few on a piece of copier paper for playing with zen patterns.

I was thinking about my sister-in-law who loves dragonflies and wants me to come up with something she can use as another tattoo. She's used one of my paintings in the past (stargazer flowers) for a tattoo on the calf of her leg. Talk about the ultimate compliment of my work!

I will probably work on more trying to simplify patterns considering it would be for a tattoo.

New Art Form - Zentangles

A gal in one of the groups I'm in asked me the other day if I had heard of Zentangles.  I hadn't heard of the term but after surfing the web, I realized I had seen this style in another group but just didn't know what it was called.

After studying several examples and reading what I could find on it, I decided to give it a go.  Talk about fun and relaxing!!!!

Back years ago I used to do what I called "Kaleidoscope Cameos".  The idea was to draw out a shape and then with light pencil do a squiggly line creating segments.  Within those segments I would use different color watercolors and different techniques..........salt, water drops, glazing, etc.

Using that same concept and what Zentangles is all about, I worked one of my original watercolor lizards but used the various patterns instead within the segments.

Here are a few more with the mushrooms finished last night.

 

 

Rather than just working in a box making random shapes and patterns, I prefer to have some sort of subject to work on.
